What To Photograph When It’s Raining

I had ones of those evenings today where I drove around for ages in the rain without coming accross anything or going anywhere that took my fancy for a photo. Part of the problem was the lack of preparation and forethought about where to go and what to photograph, but the main issue was that it was pouring down with rain. I thought I would write a quick article to give some ideas about what to photograph when it is tipping it down, both inside and outside….

Inside

Macro

There are loads of objects around the house tat make a great macro photography subject.  Dripping taps, bubbles from washing up liquid, piles of sweets, canned goods, these aare all great subjects and have a great array of colours textures and variety for photos.

Self portrait

Try taking some self portraits, make sure you are in front of a plain wall (the lighter the colour the better) and that you are in a well lit room, see my ‘Setting Up A Home Photography Studio‘ post for more detailed tips.

If you have a partner or room mate that is willing you can also practise on them!

Out and About

Interior of a church

Obviously one thing that will remain dry is if you visit different types of building and photograph the interior.  Churches offer stained glass windows, ornaments and ambient light which all add up to great photos.  Make sure you have a chat with the Vicar first to check that he is OK with you snapping away and obviously DON’t start to take photos during a service!

Wildlife

If you visit a wildlife reserve, especially ones set up for the bird wildlife then there will probably be a hide or shelter that you can use to stay out of the rain.  If not then you can pick up one of those little fishing tents quite cheaply on eBay or similar.  The rain on the surface of any water will also make for a great shot.  A good zoom lens is a huge advantage for Wildlife photos.

Shopping centre

Shopping centres offer photos of architecture, reflections from the glass, candid photos from the shoppers and HDR is a great technique that can be applied to emphasize all of these aspects.

Sports Centre

For some great action shots visit your local sports centre for some shots of some football, basketball, racket sports etc. You can use this to hone your skills at action photography and the light will be great for the indoor sports.

Woodland

If you go to a wood then the chances are that the trees will offer substantial shelter from the rain (during the summer).  It will also look fresh, clean and shiny from the rain!

Train Station

Train stations make a great photography location and will be sheltered.  As well as the trains and station themselves there is also the people aspect for candid photos.  Older stations will have great architecture and if you research it beforehand then you can get some action shots of trains shooting passed when they don’t stop at that particular station.
