Tried something new today after over exposing some photos I took yesterday, there’s quite a bit of Photoshop’ing that’s gone on with these to sharpen the images, darken certain areas and remove unwanted areas….

There are loads of articles on the internet entitled ‘What Makes a great photograph’, most of these simply run over the main elements in photography such as light, colour and composition but don’t actually explain how to put these elements together so that you know how to capture a great image PRIOR to actually taking it.

Portrait photography doesn’t need to be expensive, requiring a studio and all the kit you can carry. Take a look through Flickr, PhotoBucket and the like and there are thousands of superb portrait shots using natural light, backgrounds and poses. Remembering a few rules will stand you in good stead of capturing great images portraying emotion beauty and composition.

How To Balance Colours Using A Grey Card Within Photoshop

A grey (gray) card test is a method you can use to ensure that the colour and/or exposure in your photo is correct. The grey card is used as a reference point within the image as it is, of course, neutral in colour and remains this way in pretty much any light condition as it is non reflective. You would be suprised at the difference between a photo that the camera ‘thinks’ has the correct colour and one after you have adjusted it using the following method/s.

HDR doesn’t have to have elaborate colours, black and white HDR can have just as much impact given the right treatment and care. I take a lot of HDR photos, sometimes I take the shots with the intention of creating a black and white HDR image. Here is my workflow….

I first noticed Richard’s car portraits whilst borwsing Flickriver. His images stood out due to the sheer impact that they have and the exceptional way in which he frames the subject car and the processing he uses to make his images truly ‘pop’. Put this together with the fact that the cars he captures are awesome and you have a winning combination. I had to ask Richard a bit more about his photography……..
