Hellingly Asylum – Chillingly Great Photography

Hellingly Asylum opened in 1903 on the South West coast of Britain. Designed by G.T Hine. An onsite railway station and tramway provided Hellingly supplies. Hellingly was closed down in 1994.
Although these photos are obviously not to everyone’s taste, they do capture the imagination and go some way to show the rooms and corridors once home to many mentally ill and insane people. The shadows and light also captured in the images is also very atmospheric!

Aperture Explained

What Is Aperture? The main purpose of a lens is to collect the available light. The aperture of the lens is the size of the lens opening. The larger the aperture, the more light allowed to reach the image sensor.
Aperture is expressed as F-stop, F2.8 is the smaller the F-stop number, the larger the aperture.

Infrared Photography Explained

Infrared photography (filters etc) cause foliage to strongly reflect light in the same way visible light is reflected from snow.
Other effects of infrared photographs include very dark skies and penetration of atmospheric haze. The dark skies, in turn, result in less infrared light in shadows and dark reflections of those skies from water, and clouds stand out strongly.
